Everything is a learned skill.
You had to learn to put your socks on.
Someone had to show you how to eat and drive and read and file taxes.
Sometimes we miss important lessons.
Like how to deal with money or how to love one another well.
It's not entirely our fault, it just happens, a gap in our education on how to be functional humans.
We think ‘we’re adults now, aren’t we supposed to know this stuff?’
I used to be really bad with money. I didn't have any good money role models and banks will give any 18 year old enough credit to get into trouble.
I got into trouble.
Then I inherited some debt.
I almost drowned.
The day I walked into a bank and asked someone to teach me how to handle money was maybe one of the most embarrassing days of my life.
I am okay with money now. I still screw up sometimes, but I get to travel. I get to sleep at night without the panic of bill collectors calling in the morning or my car being repossessed. I have savings and if my car or my computer breaks tomorrow, I can afford to get a new one. I’ve got friends who make 150k a year and live paycheque to paycheque, can’t save for a week long vacation.
So maybe you never learned how to deal with money or communicate well or responsibly drink alcohol or any number of things. Who cares? You can learn now. Whatever lesson it is that you missed, it’s okay. Never be ashamed to ask for information or education or help if you need it. We are all just winging it and learning as we go.
