Channel Island Foxes are endemic only to a few islands off the coast of California. In the early 2000s only a few dozen remained because feral pigs created a stable food source for golden eagles who then took over the islands and started feeding on the foxes as well. The pigs destroyed the vegetation leaving the foxes nowhere to hide making them easy prey. Historically bald eagles (who don't eat foxes) inhabited the islands and would have challenged the golden eagles from establishing a population, but were extinct on the islands due to DDT use in the past. The Nature Conservancy and National Park Service have since removed the pigs and golden eagles, and the fox population has recovered and the bald eagles have returned. A win for conservation.
